Boxing and gambling have been close relations since the early bare knuckle days, a little too close in relations at times with many allegations of fixing and some strange officiating taking place over the years – however there is some confidence that the integrity of the sport has improved in recent years. Boxing is a very popular sport with an amazing history. All of us have, at some points of our lives, been attracted to it. If you are someone who watches boxing quite often, you have probably started wondering about boxing betting. Luckily, we have a couple of tips that will help you learn more about boxing betting, and hopefully make a you a better punter.
Here are the games that are most popular and mostly taken by the punters
MONEYLINE
The simplest way to bet on a boxing fight is to pick a winner or draw.. Here, it’s just either A,B or neither. A fighter comes with a price, which is determined by the bookmakers. The better fighter is the favorite and the lesser one is the underdog.
A favorite comes in more expensive than the underdog. You have to pay a premium to bet for him. The underdog usually comes with a plus money, which is dangled for bettors who may be willing to risk bets for higher yields. The moneyline is always the first boxing bet posted. Whatever the moneyline posted when you make the bet is the value of your bet. The amount you win after the fight is based on that
moneyline.
A draw happens when no winner is announced. This usually happens when the judges decision doesn’t have a winner. Most moneyline odds are just for both fighters but the more complete ones have a draw and they have the highest yield between the three choices you can pick from. Bettors rarely bet on a draw because commonly, a winner emerges after the boxing fight.
METHOD OF VICTORY
Another common bet that can be made on boxing is the method of victory. Instead of predicting who will win the fight, you may predict how a fight ends. A very popular prop bet among boxing fans is the Method of Victory and you can often find it at various sportsbooks. This is like a more advanced moneyline bet since you are still betting on which fighter will win but in addition to that, you are making a wager on the way he/she will win.
The ways a fight may end include a knockout, a technical knockout, opponent retired, unanimous decision, split decision, majority decision, technical decision, opponent disqualified. More often than not, punters can place their money on a fighter winning the match by a knockout. Bettors can also come across betting markets that offer odds on winning “on points”. This means that punters are placing their money on one of the fighters winning by decision.
OVER AND UNDER BET
As you already know, boxing matches can last up to 12 rounds. This opens up the possibility of betting on how long a boxing match might last.
For example, you can bet whether a boxing match lasts over or under 7 rounds. So if you bet under, the match needs to end before round 7. If you bet over, on the other hand, it needs to finish between 8th to 12th round. If the boxing match stops during round 7, it is neither under or over, and the bet is lost.
Other tips of bets in boxing are also :
- Will it go the distance? – A straightforward bet on whether or not the fight will be stopped. Has either fighter a history of being knocked down, will one fighter keep his distance, jabbing for twelve rounds, will one go all out for a stoppage?
- Round Betting – Will one fighter go all out for an early finish? Does one soak up his opponent’s punches and go for it later in the fight? Has one fighter said he will knock out the other fighter in round x in the pre- fight press conference?
- Grouped Round Betting – You have a range of rounds ie 1-3 rounds or 4-6 rounds. Lower odds than round betting, but better if you feel a boxer may come on strong in the last quarter of the fight, or the opening rounds for example.
- Knockdown Specials – Will one or both fighters be knocked down in the course of a fight? Both to get knocked down could be a good bet in a fight you consider may be an all-out slugfest, neither if the two boxers will just dance around for twelve rounds.
